Kedah flood victims surge to over 6,000, up from 4,000 yesterday

ALOR STAR: The number of flood victims in Kedah surged by nearly 20 per cent, with over 6,000 people evacuated to 41 temporary flood relief centres (PPS) today, compared to over 4,000 people yesterday.

An update on the Welfare Services Department (JKM) mobile application as of 5pm today showed that 6,749 victims are sheltering in 41 PPS across six districts in the state.

Kota Setar tops the list with 2,926 evacuees in 12 PPS, followed by Kubang Pasu with 1,602 evacuees in 12 PPS, Pendang with 993 evacuees in six PPS, and Pokok Sena with 912 evacuees in five PPS.

In southern Kedah, 184 victims are sheltering in three PPS, while in Bandar Baharu, 128 evacuees are staying in one PPS.

Meanwhile, the two PPS in the Kulim district, which housed 80 evacuees from 25 families, were closed today after the situation improved.

Kulim district officer Mohd Zaini Ramli said all evacuees were allowed to return home after Taman Kancil PPS in Lunas and Kampung Tok Betok PPS in Sungai Ular were closed at noon today.

The situation is also improving in Perlis, where the number of flood evacuees has declined by 15 per cent to 100 victims today, sheltering at two PPS in Arau and one PPS in Kangar.
