Kedah floods worsen as evacuees surge past 4,000

ALOR STAR: The flood situation in Kedah worsened overnight, with 4,378 people from five districts evacuated to temporary flood relief centers (PPS), according to an 8am update from the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat.

The number saw a sharp rise of over 2,000 people, up from 2,832 evacuees reported at 8pm yesterday.

Kedah Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said, in total, 34 PPS have been activated in the affected districts.

He said Kubang Pasu district still topped the number of victims with 1,708 evacuees from 600 families who are sheltering in 13 PPS.

"In Padang Terap district 1,145 people from 338 families are taking shelter in nine PPS, while in Kota Setar district, 735 people from 230 families have been evacuated to three PPS," he said in a statement.

"In Pokok Sena district, 429 people from 140 families are housed at three PPS while in Sik district, 361 people from 124 families are sheltering in six PPS."
