Woman dies while diving in Tenggol island

DUNGUN: A 33-year-old woman died while diving in the waters off Tokong Timur, Tenggol Island, about 13 nautical miles from Kuala Dungun yesterday.

In the 10.15am incident, Nur Atiqah Emelia Shubli from Batu 9, Cheras, Selangor was pronounced dead on the way to the Dungun Hospital.

Checks showed the victim, who worked as a secretary at a housing developer company was part of a group of 28 divers - 17 women and 11 men - who were involved in diving activity around the island.

The incident, apparently was discovered when she did not return to the surface as directed by the dive instructor.

The instructor, along with another diver, immediately dove back down to search for her.

They found the victim lying motionless on a rock at the bottom of the sea.

She was brought back to the boat, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered.

Dungun district police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir said the victim was transported by boat to the Kuala Dungun jetty before she was rushed to the Dungun Hospital in an ambulance.

"Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. Her body has since been transferred to the hospital's forensic unit to determine the cause of death," she said.
