RANAU: A female climber died while descending from the summit of Mount Kinabalu today.
The 54-year-old local woman reportedly experienced hypothermia and weakness at Km8 of the Kinabalu trail.
Ranau fire station chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 11.24am.
He said the rescue team and the victim's mountain guide contacted and requested additional assistance from Sabah Parks (TTS) personnel and the Mountain Search and Rescue Team (MoSAR) on duty for further action.
"The victim was then brought to 'Sick Bay Panalaban' for further treatment, including additional oxygen support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with the help of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
"However, the victim remained unconscious. She was then carried down to Timpohon Gate using a Neil Robertson stretcher by MoSAR, TTS, and mountain guides," he said when contacted.
Ridwan added that upon arrival at Timpohon Gate, the victim was examined by a medical officer from the Health Ministry and was pronounced dead.
"The victim's body was then handed over to the police for further action. The operation concluded at 8.35pm," he added.
