KUALA LUMPUR: The King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, has consented to the appointment of former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam as the new Chancellor of the Darjah Yang Mulia Setia Mahkota Malaysia.

The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, announced that Musa's appointment would be for a three-year term, effective from Sept 13, 2024, to Sept 12, 2027.

"This appointment aligns with the requirements outlined in the Statutes of the Darjah Yang Mulia Setia Mahkota Malaysia, ensuring the smooth execution of decrees for the conferment of the Darjah Yang Mulia Setia Mahkota under Federal Orders, Decorations, and Medals," the statement read.

The Chancellor's role includes signing certificates to verify the authenticity of issued documents.

Each honour, medal, and decoration is accompanied by a certificate, which must be signed by both the Registrar of the Orders and the Chancellor, before receiving the King's signature.

Musa previously served as deputy prime minister from July 1981 until March 1986.

He has also held positions such as Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, chairman of the 51st and 52nd Sessions of the UN Commission on Human Rights, and chairman of the World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation.
