GEORGE TOWN: Repair works are being carried out after a sinkhole appeared along Persiaran Gurney here this morning.
State Local Government Committee chairman Jason H'ng Mooi Lye said the sinkhole occurred when a lorry loaded with bricks passed through a newly constructed sewage pipeline.
He said the sewage pipeline was constructed using the pipe jacking method by the Gurney Bay project contractor.
"It is believed that there was a leak in the sewage pipe or that the installation process was not completed properly.
"As such, emergency excavation work is being carried out at the sinkhole site," he told the New Straits Times.
H'ng said the Gurney Bay project contractor had also promptly removed the lorry.
"The works are expected to be completed by tomorrow and lanes will be reopened," he added.
