KUALA LUMPUR: A proposal addressing the care and future of over 500 children rescued from homes linked to GISB Holdings (GISB) will be presented to the Cabinet next week, says Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said the proposal would outline short, medium, and long-term plans for the children, with input from several key ministries and agencies including the Education Ministry, Health Ministry, National Registration Department, the Islamic Development Department, and the police, Free Malaysia Today reported.
"Collaboration with these ministries and agencies is crucial to addressing the children's needs across various aspects such as health, identity documentation, and education," she said.
Nancy said that a court order would be required for the government to temporarily assume guardianship of these children, citing challenges such as addressing their diverse age groups and varying levels of indoctrination.
"We are working closely with experts and relevant authorities to determine the best approach for their recovery and reintegration," she added.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that a police investigation into GISB revealed that many of the 572 children rescued from the company's linked homes showed signs of abuse and trauma.
He said the children, rescued as part of the police's Op Global, were led to believe they were orphans.
They are currently housed in 11 safe houses and have undergone health screenings.
Earlier this month, police rescued 402 individuals, some as young as one, from GISBH-linked welfare homes.
On Monday, during the fourth phase of Op Global, another 187 victims were rescued, among whom were 13 victims over the age of 18.
