Custodial death in Pekan: Family ready to hear from police to seek closure

KUANTAN: The family of a 25-year-old man who allegedly committed suicide in his cell at the Pekan police headquarters on May 4 are prepared to meet with the police to clear the air about the incident.

Norazman Me's mother, Noriah Hitam, 51, said Pahang Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) director Johari Alwi is scheduled to visit her family on Tuesday (Oct 1) to discuss and make arrangements for a suitable time to meet the police.

"Late yesterday, some Jakoa officers came to my house in Runchang (Runchang Orang Asli settlement in Pekan) and informed us that the department is prepared to assist us to arrange a meeting with the police and their director will explain further on Tuesday.

"They have not fixed any date or time for the meeting (with police) but my family is ready to meet with the police to get updates on their investigations. It has been a long wait," she said when contacted today.

The mother-of-three said she had already informed the family's lawyer Datuk S. Bob Arumugam about Johari's meeting with the family members at the settlement next week.

Yesterday, Johari said Pahang Jokoa would act as an intermediary to arrange a meeting with the police if Norazman's family agrees for the department to assist.

On Sept 26, Norazman's family urged the police to explain his death as there have been no updates since May 4.

The father-of-one was picked up to assist in investigations into motorcycle theft on May 1.

Yesterday, Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the department was prepared to meet Norazman's family members to clear doubts about the incident.
