SINTOK: A 600km from Melaka to Sintok might seem daunting, but for Ee Tai Qing, it was an act of brotherly love.
The 27-year-old fruit seller made the long journey on his motorcycle to ensure his younger brother, Tai Zhi, didn't start university alone.
Tai Qing set off from their home in Sungai Udang on Sunday, while his brother, 21, took a bus with his heavy bags.
"My brother took the bus because of his luggage, but he still needed a family member at Universiti Utara Malaysia for registration. So, I decided to ride all the way here. He needed someone for this big occasion," Tai Qing said during UUM Orientation Week.
The brothers reunited in Changlun before resting at a motel. After two days, Tai Zhi was ready to begin his Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management.
Grateful for his brother's dedication, Tai Zhi shared how close they are and expressed his determination to succeed.
"I came to UUM for a brighter future and hope to repay my family for their sacrifices," he said.
Their touching story caught the attention of UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan and deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, who personally welcomed the siblings.
A viral photo of Tai Qing's arrival on his yellow Honda Wave DX110 outside UUM's Chancellory office captured hearts online.
Tai Zhi is among 4,195 new students for UUM's 2024/2025 academic session.
Foad emphasised the university's ongoing support for underprivileged and disabled students, highlighting fee deferments and RM500 cash aid for those in need.
