ALOR STAR: More than 6,700 graduates will receive their degree scrolls during Universiti Utara Malaysia's (UUM) 27th convocation from Nov 10 to 14.
UUM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah will grace the opening session and confer degrees as the university's chancellor.
He said of the total 6,742 graduates, 5,539 were undergraduates, 1,126 were postgraduates and 77 were executive diploma graduates.
"The convocation will celebrate 6,330 local graduates and 412 international graduates from 24 countries, including 151 from Indonesia, 55 from China, 31 from Somalia, 29 from Saudi Arabia and six from Palestine," he said during a press conference here today.
The Royal Education Award will be presented to Muhammad Shuib Rosli, 23, a Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business with Honours graduate, and Emina Kulasic Bong Ei Min, 24, a Bachelor of International Affairs Management with Honours graduate. They will receive RM7,500 and a certificate.
The Chancellor's Gold Medal will be awarded to Nur Eina Athirah Norazman, 23, a Bachelor of Human Resource Management with Honours graduate. She will receive RM4,000 and a certificate.
"Of the 5,539 undergraduates, 1,681 are graduating with first class honours," Foad said.
"UUM is also celebrating the first batch of 30 graduates from three new programmes."
He said the university aimed to see at least 95 per cent of graduates gain employment after graduation, consistent with last year's rate.
"A total of 324 undergraduates from this session are receiving high salaries of at least RM4,000 a month.
"Nine undergraduates are earning more than RM10,000 a month even before they step on stage for the convocation."
