Family forced to return to PPS just after cleaning flood-hit home

KUBANG PASU: Azizah Wahab and her family had just finished cleaning their flood-hit home three days ago and were looking forward to having their life return to normalcy.

Those hopes were dashed this morning when floods struck their home Kampung Nang Mah yet again, the third time in less than three weeks.

The family is now at their wits' end after being forced to return to the temporary flood relief centre (PPS) in SMK Changlun.

Azizah is among 154 flood victims who were relocated to the school after their homes were submerged by floodwaters following heavy rain yesterday.

She, along with her five children, had to move to the PPS around 4am today as the floodwaters around her house rose to almost a metre.

"We first went to the PPS on Sept 19 and stayed for four days. We went to the centre again on Sept 27 for three days, and now, we're back here less than a week later.

"We just finished cleaning the house three days ago. Now, we have to move back here again.

"This situation is exhausting," she said.

She said although the floods are an annual event, this year's were the worst, particularly the third wave where the water levels were even higher.

"Yesterday's heavy rain caused Sungai Laka behind our house to overflow. The water started entering our house around 7pm and kept rising, making it impossible for us to sleep. Eventually, we evacuated to the PPS at 4am.

"I'm particularly worried about my youngest son, who's only four and has asthma, but thankfully, nothing has happened to him so far," she said.

Meanwhile, Kampung Paya Nong Mi resident Abdul Syukur Md Amin, 55, said he was forced to evacuate to the PPS for the third time yesterday, primarily for the safety of his 78-year-old mother, Jamaliah Bakar.

"Last night, the floodwaters, which brought mud along with them, rose quickly around 9pm, forcing us to evacuate here.

"But Alhamdulillah, all our needs are well taken care of here (at the PPS).

"Still, it's quite painful to deal with this, as my house hasn't even been fully cleaned from the last flood before we got hit again, and now we're back at the PPS for the third time," he said.
