Public applauds change to Saturday-Sunday weekend in Johor

KUALA LUMPUR: The public applauded the decision to redesignate Saturday and Sunday as weekends in Johor starting next year.

Earlier today, Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim announced that the change would take effect beginning Jan 1 next year.

Aidah Abdul Rahman, a senior manager at a government-linked company in Johor Baru, expressed her enthusiasm for the change.

"Families should prioritise spending more time together, and events should be better budgeted. Currently, it is spread across Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

"Now, it can be better planned," she added.

On Facebook, Muhammad Izuan Azman said, "Great news! I hope there will be strict regulations for private companies to allocate time for Muslim staff to perform Friday prayers."

Meanwhile, Robin Loo stated, "Daulat Tuanku, thank you. This is a positive move economically move for an international city like Johor Baru.

On X, Ooi Beng Cheang (@luxentX) remarked, "Good for Johor now that they standardised the weekend to Saturday and Sunday. Will make banking and financial services easier too.

He added, "A few months ago, I was talking to a C-Suite from Johor. he travelled between KL and JB for work and I asked him if he ever had time to rest since the only off day is Saturday.

"He said it was really tiring since Sunday is a working day in JB and when he is in KL, Friday is a working day."

Johor has observed Friday and Saturday as its official weekend since January 2014.
