Cameron Highlands: Flash floods and landslides, 5 families evacuated

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Heavy rain at Sungai Ruil, Tanah Rata, here yesterday forced the evacuation of 31 people to a temporary centre.

Cameron Highlands police chief Deputy Superintendent Azri Ramli said the Orang Asli villagers, including children from five families, were relocated to the Sungai Ruil Hall around 6pm after flash floods affected their homes.

A fire department spokesperson said the rain, which began around 3pm, caused flash floods in low-lying areas near Sungai Ruil, including the entrance to the Orang Asli resettlement project.

Mud from nearby hills covered the main road, but water has since receded, and cleanup efforts are ongoing.

No casualties were reported.

The New Straits Times has reached out to Tanah Rata assemblyman Ho Chi Yang and the Civil Defence Department for more information.
