36 Orang Asli villagers moved to relief centre due to Cameron Highlands flash floods

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The number of flash flood and landslide victims in Tanah Rata near here recorded a slight increase to 36 people today compared to 33 yesterday.

The Cameron Highlands Disaster Management Committee, in a statement, said the Orang Asli victims from seven families were currently seeking shelter at the Kampung Sungai Ruil community centre.

"Continuous heavy rain on Monday had triggered landslides and flash floods at Kampung Sungai Ruil forcing the victims to be temporarily sheltered at the relief centre. Yesterday, the relief centre had 33 victims from six families.

"Various agencies including the fire and rescue department, Public Works department and Alam Flora have been deployed to assist with the clean up works at the settlement," read the statement.

The Disaster Management Committee said no casualties were reported and all the victims including children at the relief centre will be provided with necessary assistance.

Meanwhile, Cameron Highlands police chief Deputy Superintendent Azri Ramli said seven houses, including two homestays, were hit by mud floods following the heavy rain and landslide incident.

He said police were alerted about the incident at Kampung Sungai Ruil and Golden Hill Brinchang about 5.35pm on Oct 7 and the landslide had resulted in seven premises being inundated by mud flood.
