Govt plans bold revamp of Postal Services Act to embrace change

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to amend the Postal Services Act 2012 to better align with the evolving postal and courier landscape, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said that a consultant had recently been appointed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to evaluate the proposed amendments.

"This amendment reflects the significant changes occurring in the postal and courier industry today," he said at a press conference following the launch of World Post Day celebrations at Pos Malaysia Bhd today.

The consultancy is expected to take eight to 12 months, with the hope of drafting amendments by 2026 if the process runs smoothly.

However, Fahmi did not disclose specific details regarding the amendments.

"I believe the consultants will thoroughly assess the entire sector, including all companies involved and Pos Malaysia itself, while considering developments in social media and social commerce," he said.

He also said there was a need for delivery and logistics companies to adopt future technologies, such as electric vehicles and artificial intelligence, to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.

"Courier and delivery services must leverage technology, including electric vehicles. Pos Malaysia currently has 200 e-bikes and 143 electric vehicles, with plans to expand this fleet.

"These initiatives will not only promote sustainability but also reduce Pos Malaysia's carbon footprint. Other companies should also adopt a more sustainable approach to minimise their environmental impact," he added.

Earlier, Fahmi launched a special commemorative stamp set in celebration of World Post Day.

Present at the launch were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, Pos Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, and Pos Malaysia CEO Charles Brewer.

The limited-edition stamp set, priced at RM50, includes a stamp sheet, a miniature sheet, a First Day Cover with stamps, and a First Day Cover with a miniature sheet.

The stamps are available at all Pos Malaysia Philately Bureaus, including 13 General Post Offices nationwide, as well as online.

World Post Day is celebrated annually on Oct 9 to commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
