DAP tasks Bangi MP to scrutinise, have a clear understanding of the mufti bill

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has tasked Bangi member of Parliament Syahredzan Johan with scrutinising and briefing the party's federal lawmakers on the Mufti Bill (Federal Territories) 2024.

Its secretary-general Anthony Loke said this follows a statement made by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar yesterday, who called on all parties not to create doubts that could lead to misinterpretations of the Mufti Bill.

"Many people are trying to interpret the bill in their own ways.

"I think the Religious Minister has made it very clear that the perspectives mentioned by some quarters are not accurate."

"As far as the bill is concerned, I have asked Bangi MP to scrutinise the bill line by line, cross by cross and to give a better understanding to DAP MPs before the parliamentary session," he said at a press conference at the Federal Territories Kuala Lumpur DAP Ordinary Convention here today.

Yesterday, Na'im urged all parties not to create doubts among the Muslim and non-Muslim communities that could lead to misinterpretations of the Mufti Bill (Federal Territories) 2024.

He said doing so would hinder the government's efforts to strengthen the administration of Islam in the country.

The bill comprises nine sections including the introductory section, Mufti and Deputy Mufti, Fatwa Committee, the issuance of fatwas, determination of the qibla, Falak Syarie (Syariah Astronomy) committee, Rukyah Hilal (sighting of the new moon) Committee, Islamic Teachings Oversight Committee, aqidah (faith) discussions and various other matters.
