Penang agency monitoring turbidity level of raw water at Lahar Tiang intake

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corp (PBAPP) is monitoring the turbidity levels of raw water at the Lahar Tiang intake due to heavy rainfall and flooding upstream of Sungai Muda.

PBAPP said the Sungai Dua water treatment plant was operating as normal.

"We, however, advise water users to maintain water reserve in their homes for at least 24 hours of use at any given time."

On Oct 2, PBAPP had averted a water supply cut despite murky water in Sungai Muda due to floods in Baling, Kedah.

The floods in Baling had washed down debris into Sungai Muda and caused the river water to become turbid or murky at the Lahar Tiang intake.

On July 6, 2022, a Baling flood had caused the turbidity of Sungai Muda water to shoot up to 3,000 NTU at Lahar Tiang.

The mishap forced the corporation to reduce raw water removal from Sungai Muda, which, in turn, caused treated water production at the Sungai Dua plant to drop.

This affected about 465,000 consumers.

Sungai Muda is Penang's primary raw water resource.
