[UPDATED] Taman Melawati landslide: Soil still unstable, checks show

KUALA LUMPUR: An initial safety assessment of the landslide at Jalan E6, Taman Melawati today (Oct 15) showed that the soil is still unstable.

Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said this was the outcome of an assessment by the Minerals and Geosciences Department and Public Works Department.

He said as such, residents who were told to vacate their houses earlier, have been told not to stay in their houses tonight for safety reasons.

"Another assessment will be conducted tomorrow.

"Once the road is clear, we will allow the affected residents to go back to retrieve their vehicles and belongings. They have been advised however to not stay at their houses tonight," he said.

Mohd Azam said the authorities have placed tarpaulin sheets over the affected area to slow down soil movement on the slope.

"We will work through the rain to do this as soon as possible.

"For now only residents along Jalan E6 have been ordered to evacuate. The other roads remain unaffected by the incident," he said.

Continuous heavy rain earlier today led to a landslide along Jalan E6 in Taman Melawati.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel said the 20-metre by 20m slope had collapsed from a height of 30m.

Police have also ordered residents of 20 houses near the landslide to evacuate their homes. (LINK:

Police said all residents affected by the incident were ordered to evacuate to the Multipurpose Hall in Jalan E5 Taman Melawati for the time being.

Meanwhile Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 (Hulu Langat) chief Shahrin Yusmar Mat Yusof said they have cleared the drain at the top of the slope.

"There was a build up of sand and stones in the drain which led to water buildup.

"We cleared the drain to avoid it from collapsing under the weight of the water and debris inside," he said.

He said they have also deployed a pump to divert water to another drain to reduce water flow in the affected section.

Meanwhile Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) management sector head Johar Atli said work on clearing the affected road was almost completed.

"Backhoes were deployed to the scene. We estimate that work is 80 per cent completed in clearing up the debris from the roads," he said.
