Anwar: RM232 million in aid given to states as disaster preparation

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has given out RM232 million in aid to all states as preparation for natural disasters this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the funds were to be allocated to each head of household affected by disasters, with the caveat that certain requirements were met.

He said Nadma was ready to allocate additional funds should states request for more, based on the actualy number of households affected.

"All of these plans will be reviewed from time to time by the (federal) government. In line with disaster management goals, the responsibility should be shared among the federal government, state governments, local authorities, communities, and NGOs (non-governmental organisations)."

The prime minister said this when responding to a question from Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PN-Rantau Panjang) in the Dewan Rakyat.

He said, in order to ensure prompt action is taken in the event of any disaster, including major floods, the Central Disaster Management Committee meeting on Oct 3 had directed that district disaster management committees be activated and their roles strengthened at all disaster locations.
