Perak braces for recurring floods as 1,330 seek shelter across state

IPOH: The flood situation in Perak is reminiscent of the 2014 crisis, but is affecting new locations as well, said

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

He advised residents to remain vigilant due to unpredictable weather conditions.

"I have read meteorological reports advising people to stay alert until the end of the year.

"This flood phenomenon is similar to 2014. However, unlike that year, when it occurred simultaneously across locations, we now see it repeatedly affecting the same and new locations over time," he said.

Saarani told reporters after opening the 48th Annual General Meeting of the Perak State Farmers' Organisation (PPNP) at Casuarina Hotel @ Meru today.

In 2014, more than 7,000 victims were forced to leave their homes due to the flooding. The affected districts included Perak Tengah, Hulu Perak, Kerian, and Kuala Kangsar.

Following this, Saarani called on all district officers and relevant departments, including village chiefs, to remain alert and assist affected residents.

"Those living near major rivers, streams, and canals, including those in urban areas, need to be especially cautious.

"The rain has been falling unpredictably, with significant intensity and duration," he noted.

As of noon today, a total of 1,330 flood victims are temporarily sheltering at 11 relief centers (PPS) in the districts of Kerian, Kuala Kangsar, Hilir Perak, Perak Tengah, and Kampar.

Kuala Kangsar is the worst-hit area, with 911 victims, followed by Hilir Perak (170), Perak Tengah (133), Kerian (75), and Kampar (41).
