1MDB asset recovery task force to brief PAC next month

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will summon the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) asset recovery task force next month for a status update on Malaysia's guarantee commitment grants regarding the sovereign wealth fund's debts.

PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said it will call on the committee, helmed by Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who is also Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, to obtain the latest information on actions taken so far on the issue.

She said Auditor General Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi earlier today briefed the PAC on the Auditor General's Report 3/2024 Series 3, namely the federal government's financial statements for 2023.

"The two-hour briefing began at 11.30am. Among the items of interest were the Account Receivables under the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and the 1MDB guarantee commitment grants.

"As such, the PAC will summon the IRB as well as the 1MDB asset recovery task force for proceedings to obtain more information on actions taken regarding these issues.

"The proceedings have been fixed for November," she said.

The AG's Report earlier this week said the federal government had forked out RM39.74 billion in guarantee commitment grants to 1MDB's debts from 2019 to 2023.

The grants comprised RM29.62 billion in principal repayments and RM10.11 billion in other expenses, including bond interest and coupon payments.

The government has recovered a total of RM27.17 billion related to 1MDB as of Sept 30. The funds deposited into the Asset Recovery Trust Account (AAMKA) now amount to RM3.04 billion.
