[UPDATED] Wee appointed adviser for Chinese investments in Malaysia [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Former minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has been appointed adviser for Chinese investments in Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president, said Wee would serve under him.

"The MCA president was part of the delegation during my visit to China.

"The RM5 billion investment in the halal industry in China was the result of my and the MCA president's efforts."

Zahid, who chairs the Halal Industry Development Council, said this in his speech at the opening of MCA's 71st annual general assembly at Wisma MCA today.

In his speech, Zahid promised that Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), established by MCA in 2002, would be improved.

He said the government had approved the waiver of tax arrears for Utar.

Wee, in his speech earlier, said he hoped Utar would be exempted from taxes as it is managed by a non-profit body, Utar Education Foundation (Utaref).

He said this is in line with Section 44(6) and Section 127(3A) of the Income Tax Act 1967.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said a RM83 million tax waiver had been granted to Utar as non-profit educational entities are not taxed.
