PM: GLCs with weak management should not expect bonuses

KUALA LUMPUR: Government-linked companies (GLCs) that fail to generate profits or those which demonstrate poor management should not expect to receive bonuses.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these GLCs must bear in mind the responsibilities they have.

"For a long time, I have seen six to eight months' worth of bonuses being regarded as the norm.

"(However,) we have already put a stop to this since last year. They must also consider that they were selected to have responsibilities," he said when replying to a supplementary question raised by Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Earlier, Anwar said the government fully supports the National Audit Department's (NAD) audit of 2,000 government-linked companies (GLCs) starting next year.

The prime minister said the department's involvement would enhance oversight at lower levels and help resolve the frequent confusion arising among agencies.

He also said the government is committed to addressing overlapping functions within statutory bodies and GLCs through the establishment of a rationalisation coordination office for statutory bodies, as heard in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Anwar said there is an overlap of agencies and some agencies are operating differently from their original objectives.
