GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to organise Jualan Rahmah Madani Deepavali to ease the burden of Hindus.
CAP education officer NV Subbarow said many people from the community were not well off.
"By having Jualan Rahmah Madani Deepavali, it will help ease the burden of those preparing for the celebration.
"Based on the experience of those who had gone to Jualan Rahmah Madani, they had enjoyed some savings.
"As such, we appeal to the government to hold Jualan Rahmah Madani Deepavali," he said at Little India here.
Subbarow said there had never been a specific Jualan Rahmah Madani for Deepavali.
He also said they had not received many complaints on price increase of essential items.
"Nevertheless, we hope mutton will be made affordable for all. We also hope the government will ensure an ample supply of cooking oil and others."
On another matter, Subbarow urged Hindus to make this year's Deepavali a plastic-free celebration.
In today's era, he said the challenge was to embrace an eco-friendly Deepavali.
"Celebrating Deepavali in a responsible and eco-friendly manner not only preserves the environment but also sets an example for future generations.
"Some sweet sellers complain that consumers request for single-use plastic bags for every item. This practice must stop as plastics harm the environment, wildlife and human health in many ways, as well as contribute to climate change.
"As such, CAP advise Hindus to say no to plastic utensils, decorations and gift packaging.
"Bring your own stainless steel containers to buy sweets. Bring your own bags when shopping. Do not serve food in plastic containers or use plastic cutlery. Switch to reusable utensils," he added.
