AI can help govt curb corruption, says Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) by the government may indirectly help to reduce corruption cases, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Azalina said AI technology is automated and could reduce the likelihood of individuals making decisions that could be susceptible to bribery.

"Everyone knows that when we talk about the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the presence of AI today can indirectly help reduce corruption, whether we like it or not.

"This is why this technology is a way forward for reforming institutions, with new laws and existing technological systems facilitating changes.

"This will allow our country to see a reduction in discretionary decisions that promote corruption," she said during the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Azalina said this in response to a supplementary question from Aminolhuda Hassan (PH-Sri Gading) regarding the government's plans to expand institutional reforms in the judiciary and law enforcement sectors to ensure the independence of these institutions.

Meanwhile, she added that institutional reforms did not only involve legislative improvements, but also the roles of all parties involved.

"That is why I believe we must understand that the law (improvements) are not the solution to all problems.

"The laws in our country and the existing institutions must evolve with the times," she said.
