KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will only take action to remove content related to Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISB) if directed by the police.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that MCMC had not yet informed him of any actions against content that was not directly related to GISB, including viral songs and parodies created by users.
"In terms of investigations, MCMC will act to remove content or direct social media platforms if instructed by the police.
"As for the earworm meme songs, there are no reports. I have not been informed of any actions from MCMC," he said at a press conference today.
Meanwhile, Fahmi, who also serves as the unity government spokesman, acknowledged that social media played a significant role in addressing deviant teachings in light of GISB's issues, particularly as many concerns had arisen from videos uploaded on these platforms.
However, he refrained from elaborating further, citing ongoing police investigations and court proceedings.
He assured that the cabinet would receive updates regarding GISB periodically.
"The cabinet received the latest information from the Religious Affairs Minister (Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar) and the Minister for Women, Family, and Community Development (Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri) regarding the safety and well-being of children currently under government care.
"The police have indicated that the entity has changed its operations multiple times, possibly conducting activities covertly," he said.
When asked if the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) had proposed the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) during the meeting, Fahmi confirmed that this matter was not discussed.
On Sept 11, police conducted "Op Global," raiding welfare homes allegedly operated by GISB, leading to the rescue of 402 children.
GISB has since denied the allegations.
Screenings of the children revealed many of them suffered physical and emotional injuries.
Subsequent police probes also found that the members of GISB were still practising the banned "Aurad Muhammadiyah" linked to the banned Al-Arqam community.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said serious and coordinated action between the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and enforcement agencies was important to combat all forms of deviant teachings and ideologies.
