SHAH ALAM: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil says he plans to reach out to Indonesia's new Minister of Communications, Meutya Hafid, to discuss online safety issues.
He said Malaysia's upcoming chairmanship of Asean next year would be a key opportunity for ministers to address pressing matters related to social media, including fake news and scams.
"I recently met with Indonesia's Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Hermono. With Minister Meutya recently sworn in on Oct 21, I will contact her office soon to initiate discussions," he said after delivering a Ministerial Talk at UiTM Shah Alam today.
The talk, titled "Digital Safety Literacy," was organised by the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FKPM), during which Fahmi also launched UFM UiTM Radio, the faculty's student-run station.
Fahmi said that while Asean lacked regulations like the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, a unified approach among member countries could enhance internet safety for families and children.
"Each country can adapt to its own context, but a shared direction could lead to success for Asean," he added.
Fahmi also extended his congratulations to Meutya on her appointment and wished her well in her new role.
