MACC chief supports feedback system to curb corruption in govt allocations

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has expressed his personal support for implementing a periodic feedback mechanism for government allocations.

On Tuesday, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz advocated for such a system to monitor government funding and prevent abuse. (https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/10/1123654/rafidah-establish-per...)

"I personally support the recommendation," Azam said after the Basic Course graduation ceremony for MACC Officers Series 28 today.

"However, it is ultimately up to the Ministry of Finance, which has greater expertise in this area," he added.

Rafidah, who is also former Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister, said that Malaysia lacked a monitoring system to identify misappropriations and corrupt practices before they occur.

"This could be implemented every six or even three months, rather than waiting five years for feedback. Currently, we don't have this type of system in place," she said.

Commenting on the 2025 Budget, she said that effective enforcement was crucial to ensure that government allocations were utilised appropriately.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions. While the government may have good intentions, it is essential to enforce measures that prevent leaks or misappropriation of funds."
