11th AMCA meeting strengthens cultural ties among Asean nations

KUALA LUMPUR: The 11th Meeting of Asean Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts (AMCA), hosted in Melaka, aims to enhance cultural cooperation among Asean nations.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that the event, which welcomed over 700 delegates from various countries, marked a significant milestone for both Melaka and the region.

"This meeting not only promotes Melaka as a Unesco World Heritage site but also provides a platform for Asean members and dialogue partners, particularly from China, Japan, and South Korea, to engage in cultural exchange," he said in an interview with TV3.

Also present was Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Rauf said that the AMCA would invigorate Melaka's tourism sector, particularly during Visit Melaka Year.

"This year marks Visit Melaka Year, and we have organised 100 programmes to enrich visitors' experience. Hosting AMCA is a key part of this initiative. We will showcase local arts, traditional theatre, music, and dances from various ethnic communities in Malaysia, especially those unique to Melaka.

"With the Asean Festival of Arts scheduled for the 26th of this month, we are optimistic that Melaka will attract even more tourists next year," he added.

Meanwhile, Tiong said that AMCA embodied a spirit of collaboration among nations.

"AMCA serves as a historical platform for Asean countries to promote their cultures collectively. Melaka's recognition as a Unesco World Heritage site further enhances the significance of this gathering."
