KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg does not have any problem with former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak apologising over the mishandling of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal.
"We welcome his apology," he said today after launching the Sarawak regatta here.
Abang Johari was asked to respond to Najib's apology.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also welcomed the open apology made by Najib concerning the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
"I welcome it," Anwar told reporters yesterday.
Two days ago, Najib issued an apology for his mishandling of the multibillion-dollar 1MDB financial scandal, but maintained he had no knowledge of illegal transfers from the now-defunct state fund.
The Federal Court, in 2022, upheld a guilty verdict against Najib for corruption and money laundering for illegally receiving about US$10 million from former 1MDB unit SRC International, sentencing him to 12 years in prison.
The sentence was later halved by a pardons board chaired by a former Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Najib, 71, has consistently denied wrongdoing and on Thursday expressed remorse about the 1MDB scandal in a letter read at a press conference by his son, Mohamad Nizar Mohd Najib.
Najib, during his tenure as the prime minister, had made many official visits to Sarawak, more than the combined total by his predecessors.
One of the megaprojects approved by him was the multibillion-ringgit Pan Borneo Highway.
