KOTA BARU: This year, like previous years, will be a simple and moderate Deepavali celebration for the Indian community in Kelantan.
"Normally, we will only decorate our homes two days before Deepavali. It is not we do not want to do more, but we need to wait for our children to return home," said a resident who only wanted to be known as Mariammah.
The 79-year-old from Kampung Pasir Kelang in Kuala Krai said her children who live outside Kelantan, are expected to return on Tuesday evening.
B.Rukumani, 74, said she would be preparing some murukku for her family and guests.
"Murukku is a symbol of tradition and l will never miss making it for my family every time we celebrate Deepavali," said Rukumani who is from Bukit Sireh.
The two best friends said they were not decorating their homes with kolam decorations but would be serving murukku and other Indian traditional snacks to guests.
"We will also go to our friend's houses to celebrate the festival with them as they live in the same district as us," said Rukumani.
Rukumani and Mariammah and their friends S.Sarada,75; Manimergelai Marimutu, 64; and Piar Govindama,71, were met recently at a hotel here.
The five senior citizens were excited to see a beautiful kolam decoration up close when they attended a programme held at the hotel.
