[UPDATED] Free toll for Deepavali on Tuesday and Wednesday [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians travelling in private vehicles will enjoy free tolls from 12.01am tomorrow until 11.59pm the following day in conjunction with the Deepavali celebrations on Oct 31.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the toll exemption applies to all types of vehicles at all toll plazas, except for the toll plazas at thecountry's border, namely at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) toll and the Tanjung Kupang toll in Johor.

Nanta, in a statement today, said the two days of toll-free travel would have an estimated financial implication of RM38 million, which will be borne by the government and paid to all toll concessionaires.

"The unity government has agreed to provide free tolls on Oct 29 and Oct 30 to allow highway users, especially the Indian community, to celebrate the Deepavali in a joyful, harmonious, and respectful atmosphere.

"The toll exemption will only be granted to Class 1 vehicles (private vehicles) at all toll plazas, except for the toll plazas at the country's border, namely the BSI toll and the Tanjung Kupang toll in Johor.

"This free toll aligns with the core principles of the unity government, which focuses on welfare and compassion, helping to ease the cost of living for the people while strengthening the culture of unity among people from all ethnic groups in the country," the statement said.

Nanta also advised the public to plan their journeys to ensure smooth and safe travel as they make their way to their hometowns or other destinations during the Deepavali celebrations.

"On behalf of the Works Ministry, the Malaysian Highway Authority and all highway concession, I call on all road users to drive safely and adhere to all road regulations."
