'Najib's apology for 1MDB scandal means nothing,' says Loke

SEPANG: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke says that Datuk Seri Najib Razak's apology for the 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal "means nothing," as it does not undo his criminal conviction.

He said that the issue isn't about accepting apologies, as a crime remains a crime regardless, and Najib has already been convicted.

"I think the conviction, of course, has been proven by the court. He's been found guilty. I think that remains a fact.

"So, to me, the apology does not mean anything," he said at the sidelines of the opening ceremony for the new DHL Express Kuala Lumpur Gateway here today.

When asked if DAP would support placing Najib under house arrest to serve out the remainder of his sentence, Loke said that no such provision exists under the law.

He added that discussions regarding a house arrest law pertain to prison reform rather than Najib's situation.

He also said that there is a specific threshold where serious crimes cannot be considered for house arrest.

"Serious crimes are not eligible for house arrest. So, I think it's not a question about Najib in relation to any new law.

"As far as Najib is concerned, he's still facing multiple charges," he said.

When asked if Najib had paid his fine, Loke replied that he was unsure.

On Oct 24, Najib issued an apology to all Malaysians over the 1MDB scandal, which took place during his tenure as prime minister and finance minister.
