GEORGE TOWN: A landslide occurred near Pantai Miami here causing the road to be covered with soil, trees and boulders on Tuesday evening.
State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, who confirmed the incident, said no one was injured, as the landslide took place on private property.
"A landslide occurred about 6.30pm on Tuesday. The incident did not result in any injuries.
"The landslide caused the road behind the Miami Food Sdn Bhd to be covered with soil, trees and boulders. It took place on private property.
"It is not a structural failure according to engineers. The topsoil failure was mainly from rainfall," he told the New Straits Times.
Zairil, who is also Tanjung Bungah assemblyman, said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) took action by issuing a Notice to Remove Disturbance under Section 82 of the Local Government Act 1976 to the landowner yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bukit Bendera member of parliament Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who shared photos of the incident on her social media accounts yesterday, said upon hearing of the landslide near Pantai Miami, both the Bukit Bendera Parliament and Tanjung Bungah DUN teams acted swiftly to respond, ensuring immediate safety and assistance for the affected areas.
Syerleena, who had just returned to Penang from Parliament, joined the teams on-site to assess the situation firsthand.
"We extend our sincere thanks to MBPP, the Public Works Department, the Fire and Rescue Department and the Batu Ferringhi police for their prompt action and professionalism in managing this incident.
"Your coordinated efforts are invaluable in safeguarding our community, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available," she said.
Penang has been experiencing bouts of heavy showers in recent days.
