PUTRAJAYA: The ammendments to the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act will further expand the types of treatment for drug addicts.
National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the amendment of the law will give them a chance for a better rehabilitation process.
"The new provisions on the treatment and rehabilitation of drug or substance abuse is significant. It will give some provisions to divert misusers from the prison system to obtain treatment and rehabilitation," he said at an AADK
gathering with the media here today.
According to him, the amendement also gives authority to rehabilitation officers to conduct the necessary tests on any individual who voluntarily seek treatment.
He said the tests are important to determine the type of treatment and rehabilitation required for drug addicts.
"The new amendment also gives full authority to the Director-General to shorten the period of treatment and rehabilitation orders set at rehabilitation centre based on the recommendation of rehabilitation officers.
"The Drug Addicts (Treatment and Rehabilitation) (Amendment) Act 2024 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 18 and the Dewan Negara on Aug 1."
Ruslin said the amendment created new sources of authority as well as improvements to the existing act with a clear direction through the new provisions created.
