80-year-old PhD graduate inspires with dedication to lifelong learning

JASIN: Dr Muharam Awang obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Sciences from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) utilising his pension as a retired teacher.

The 80-year-old, who is father of seven and grandfather of 17 successfully completed his studies a year ago.

His age was no barrier in him achieving what he wanted in academia.

When reflecting on his academic journey to Harian Metro, Muharam admitted that pursuing a PhD at his age was challenging.

He said that he never considered quitting halfway due to his commitment and intention of seeking knowledge. He hoped what he did would also motivate his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

"My desire to further my studies in 2015 was driven by an interest to expand my knowledge."

He is grateful to his family, especially his wife, Fuziah Md Taha, 71, for always supporting him.

"However, not everyone supported me; there were a few people who seemed to be trying to dampen my spirit by saying it would be better to stay at home than to continue studying.

"But I didn't let that affect me because I was determined. The last time I was a student was about 10 years before I started my PhD," he said.

Muharam explained that during the first two semesters, he had to attend lectures and study alongside younger students.

"At that time (in class), I was the oldest, and some of my classmates were the same age as my children.

"There was no problem at all because I could interact with everyone, and they called me 'Haji'.

"The only challenge was having to drive myself from my home in Merlimau to UKM in Bangi, Selangor. Even the lecturers were surprised at how I managed to do it."

To enhance his learning, he adopted a technique of rewriting what he read to better retain and absorb the knowledge.

He dedicated time in a reading room at home, which he reserved for study and completing assignments.

He said that with only three people at home, there were no distractions for him to study.

" I'm more focused when I write and I am not very skilled with computers.

"All the materials I read would be rewritten and then kept for reference, while my child would help type out the assignments on the computer."

He said he would consult with his lecturers and was open to receiving criticism or even reprimands.

"This is because, despite my age, I must respect the lecturers as the ones imparting knowledge and guidance."

For those who share his passion for learning, he encouraged them to persevere, advising" "Just be patient in facing all challenges and pray to Allah to ease your affairs."

Muharam also holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree from UKM.
