CAP wants action against MPs smoking in prohibited areas in Parliament

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has expressed disappointment with some members of parliament who smoked in prohibited areas within Parliament recently.

"This is a big shame. CAP wants the speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, to take stern action against the MPs who break the rules by smoking in a prohibited area in Parliament," CAP education officer N.V. Subbarow said.

Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong had expressed his displeasure with MPs who did not respect the rules by smoking inside the Parliament building.

It is understood that three designated smoking areas are available for MPs, but some have chosen to smoke in restricted zones.

Subbarow said MPs had supported the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which came into effect on October 1.

"They are supposed to set an example for the public. By ignoring the smoking ban in Parliament, they set a bad example for society.

"We urge Health Ministry officials to monitor and take action against those who smoke in prohibited places in Parliament and impose the maximum fine of RM5,000 under Act 852," he added.
