[UPDATED]: UPNM cadet to be charged tomorrow for assaulting junior

KUALA LUMPUR: The Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) cadet, who is alleged to have placed a heated iron on the chest of a junior cadet, is expected to be charged tomorrow.

City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the suspect would be charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons or means.

"The suspect will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at around 8am tomorrow to face charges," he said.

Yesterday, it was reported that the armed forces investigation board looking into the bullying and abuse case involving a Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) cadet officer will conclude its findings on Friday.

The committee, comprising high-ranking officers from the armed forces, is expected to provide recommendations based on the outcome of the probe. The actions and recommendations made by the board will be guided by protocols related to disciplinary matters.

Last Wednesday, the armed forces confirmed it had launched an internal investigation into the incident. The cadet was reportedly abused by a senior officer using a heated iron, leaving burn marks on his chest.

This incident marks the second case of similar abuse at UPNM in seven years.

In 2017, the university was shaken by the death of cadet officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, who was tortured and burned with a heated iron. Six former UPNM students were subsequently sentenced to death by hanging for his murder.
