KUALA LUMPUR: The Parliament building, which now relies solely on solar energy, will help the government save about RM1 million a year.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said using solar power would also help contribute to Malaysia's commitments towards net-zero emissions.
"We passed the bill on renewable energy, and since Oct 1 this year, Parliament runs fully on renewable energy, through solar power."
He said this in a press conference after opening the Third Malaysian Parliament Symposium, held at the Parliament building here, today.
Johari had announced plans in November last year to incorporate solar energy into the Parliament building's operations.
He had said this was part of the legislative body's commitment to sustainability, and in line with the government's target of zero net emissions by 2025.
Meanwhile, Johari said they were studying the possibility of streaming the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meetings live to ensure more transparency and accountability.
"There have been requests for us to stream it live, but there are issues like confidentiality and official secrets.
"But we are looking into it and fine tuning the suggestion," he added.
