CYBERJAYA: The government will ensure there is healthy competition between Digital Nasional Berhad and U Mobile Sdn Bhd, the two 5G network providers in the country.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this was to prevent any single party from gaining dominance over the other.
Speaking to reporters after launching the 2024 National Couriers Day, Fahmi said there were specific conditions attached to the second 5G network provider tender.
He also said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can impose additional conditions before granting U Mobile the spectrum to implement the second 5G network.
"This is a normal procedure, and we must not confuse the selection conditions with the conditions that will be imposed for the spectrum.
"These are two different matters and all telecommunications companies understand this," he said.
It was previously reported that U Mobile will be allowed to collaborate with other mobile network operators (MNOs) to implement the second 5G network subject to MCMC's approval.
Fahmi said earlier today that if U Mobile were to partner with other MNOs on the second 5G network, MCMC would need to impose conditions to ensure there is no imbalance situation.
He said even in the merger of Celcom and Digi, MCMC required a certain amount of spectrum to be returned.
