JOHOR BARU: The state government is finalising the gazetting of land in Segamat for food security projects aimed at strengthening agricultural output and securing Johor's food supply chain.
State Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said the designated area, covering 800 to 1,200 hectares, was chosen for its low flood risk.
"We are selecting suitable crops, such as vegetables and pineapples, and poultry, along with herb farming for these gazetted plots," Zahari said after launching the "One Leader, One Village" Santuni Madani programme at Kampung Pasir's Dewan Hassan Abdullah here today.
He added that the project has identified several promising Malaysian and international entrepreneurs, with an announcement expected from Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the tabling of the 2025 state Budget on Nov 21.
In preparation for the monsoon season, Zahari said the state's agricultural bodies, including the Fisheries, Agriculture and Veterinary departments, were on alert.
"We hope this year's northeast monsoon season won't be as severe as in previous years.
"Fish catches and crop plantations are being monitored to mitigate potential losses in case of floods."
Meanwhile, SME Bank acting president and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohammad Hardee Ibrahim said the Santuni Madani programme would provide ongoing support to 8,000 villagers through loans, grants and advisory services.
SME Bank also donated RM20,000 worth of "Back to School 2025" aid to 100 students.
