MANJUNG: Police have opened an investigation paper into a viral video showing the cruel disposal of stray dogs in the district.
District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman, said investigations found that the 16-second video, uploaded by a user on Facebook and TikTok, did not fully show the location involved.
He said that the user's claim about the incident occurring in Sitiawan is suspected to be untrue.
"The police are investigating the motive behind the incident following a report made by a representative of the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) at 10.53am on Saturday," he said in a statement tonight.
The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 for improper use of network services.
Hasbullah also advised the public not to spread unverified information that could cause public concern.
On Friday, a former Manjung council member revealed that dozens of dog carcasses, along with live puppies, were left in a pit after allegedly being captured and shot by local authority officers in Sitiawan.
Khairil Azhar Khairuddin uploaded several videos showing shocking images of the dogs, some still wearing collars, left trapped in a roughly four-foot-deep hole at a garbage disposal site.
Today, MPM denied allegations made in a viral video claiming that the disposal of stray dogs in the district is handled in a cruel manner.
In a statement, MPM's strategic communications and public relations department said the viral video has led to negative public perceptions of MPM, adding that the dog carcasses shown did not represent the actual location of MPM's stray dog transit centre.
