Syed Saddiq files motion for Dewan Rakyat to debate UPNM bullying crisis

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has submitted an emergency motion to the august house to address the bullying crisis at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

"I am submitting an emergency motion to Parliament to seek a comprehensive solution to put an end to the culture of bullying," he posted on X.

This is in response to a string of bullying cases to have come out of UPNM, with the most recent allegedly involving a 19-year-old student who is being warded in a hospital for two fractures.

Saddiq, who is former youth and sports minister, condemned the normalisation of bullying within the institution.

"Bullying has become systemic and normalised at UPNM," he wrote, referencing the tragic murder of cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain in 2017 as well as a recent incident on Oct 22, both involving heated irons.

"This is absurd," he said, demanding immediate intervention.

Saddiq warned against complacency and urged for action.

"Enough is enough. Do we need to wait for another death before taking action?"

Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, who was accused of pressing a heated steam iron on the chest of Muhammad Salman Mohd Saiful Surash, 20, on Oct 22, claimed trial last Friday to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapon.

This was after Zulfarhan's murder shocked the nation and six former UPNM students were sentenced to death.
