Motion to refer Wan Saiful to Parliamentary committee to be tabled on Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: A motion to refer Tasek Gelugor member of Parliament Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee On Fundamental Liberty And Constitutional Rights, is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

This comes after the allegations made by Wan Saiful's during Dewan Rakyat sessions on Feb 28 and March 21, where he alleged that the court case against him could be annulled and dropped if he declared his support for the unity government.

According to the Order Paper for the June 24 sitting, which is available on the Parliament's website, the motion is expected to be moved by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department after the minister's question time.

"On Feb 28 and March 21, Wan Saiful said that the court charges against him could be annulled and dropped, as noted in the Official Report on page 41 on Feb 2 and pages 38 and 39 on March 21.

"This House takes seriously the statements made by the Tasek Gelugor MP, which implicitly alleged that there are individuals supposedly acting on behalf of the government who could manipulate the annulment or dropping of court charges against himself.

"This conduct indicates that the Tasek Gelugor MP has commented on matters under judicial consideration, which could be seen as undermining the interests of the parties involved in the case," the motion stated.

According to the motion, Wan Saiful should be referred to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee to determine whether his statements were misleading and detrimental to the interests of the involved parties.

"To determine whether the statements made by the Tasek Gelugor MP in the House were misleading and detrimental to the interests of the parties involved in the case.

"..and to take any evidence deemed necessary, after which this committee should make recommendations in a report for the House's consideration," it said.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on March 5 submitted a motion to suspend Wan Saiful for six months for accusing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of abusing power.

Wan Saiful later apologised for his actions, which included making malicious statements against Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat.
