Bribe giver, taker must be punished, says Sabah Pas

KOTA KINABALU: Both the giver and receiver of bribes must be punished, said Sabah PAS nominted assemblyman Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan.

"Corruption is a great calamity for humanity.

"It can cause widespread harm and act like a dangerous cancer within the administrative system," he said in a statement today.

His comments amid reports of a recording of lawmakers discussing bribes.

Aliakbar did not comment on the purported recordig, but said graft would have a severe impact on Sabah's development.

He also said bribery, which is a major sin in Islam, would erode trust and governance.

"Islam teaches that ill-gotten wealth is not only sinful for those who use it but also a fire that will ultimately consume them in Hell."

He said Sabah Pas urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the matter.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had said his government had nothing to hide and asked the authorities to also take action against the bribe givers.
