KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin described the late Tun Daim Zainuddin as the architect of Malaysia's economy.
Hamzah said under Daim's leadership, Malaysia was recognised as the 'Asian Tiger.'
"Tun Daim was a distinguished statesman whose contributions to the country were immeasurable.
"He was a figure of great service to Malaysia, and his sacrifices for the nation will be remembered forever," he said when met after paying his last respects at Daim's residence.
Hamzah added: "On behalf of all Perikatan Nasional MPs, we express our heartfelt condolences following his passing earlier today.
"We pray that Allah grants him mercy and places him among the righteous in the hereafter."
Other than Hamzah, among those who paid their last respects were former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, Kota Baru MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq, who was visibly sad, said that with Daim's passing, he had lost a mentor, and Malaysia had lost a statesman.
"He was a mentor before I entered politics. I am indebted to him and pray that his soul is placed among the faithful."
Earlier, the remains of the former finance minister left Assunta Hospital at 11.10am and arrived at the residence at 11.30am.

Funeral prayers are expected to be held after Asar prayers at Masjid Wilayah, Jalan Duta.
Earlier, Daim's lawyer, Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar confirmed his client's passing.
Daim, the businessman turned politician, served as finance minister between 1984 to 1991 and later between 1998 to 2001.
