KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) confirmed that a misunderstanding between two individuals, where a retired motivational speaker was allegedly threatened and assaulted last Friday at the Armed Forces Training Academy (ALK), Kem Perdana Sungai Besi, has been resolved amicably.

In a statement tonight, the Defense Ministry's Intelligence and Strategic Communications Department said that an altercation between an a counselling officer and a guest facilitator, a retired Armed Forces personnel, which went viral, has been settled through an arranged meeting facilitated by the Armed Forces.

"Reflecting the spirit of camaraderie and unity among current and former Armed Forces personnel, the meeting was concluded with mutual apologies from both individuals.

"Both parties agreed to withdraw their police reports and end the matter peacefully," it said.

Yesterday, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin had said the parties involved had lodged police reports, and that the ministry would await the outcome of the investigation before determining the next steps.

The statement also urged the public to refrain from making unfounded speculations about the incident.

It said that the dispute was in fact a misunderstanding that could have been avoided.

On Tuesday it was reported that Major (R) Mohamad Qayyum Badaruddin, 56, claimed that he was hurled abusive words and abused by an officer who is also a counsellor, believed to be from the Counselling Unit of the MAF Headquarters when he was about to give a lecture to cadet officers of the Military Training Academy (ALK), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

Mohamad Qayyum said the officer had also threatened to punch him, claiming that he need not be respected since he was no longer a military officer who is in service.

Cheras police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan had confirmed receiving a report about the incident today and that investigations were being carried out.
