GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has expressed his gratitude to Barisan Nasional (BN) for playing a pivotal role as a "pillar of political stability" within both the federal and state governments over the past two years.
In an FMT report, Chow commended BN's component parties, including the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), for their continued support of the Penang administration, especially during the 2023 state election.
Reflecting on the importance of political cooperation, the former Penang DAP chief highlighted how the alliance between Pakatan Harapan (PH), BN, and other political entities has strengthened the unity government.
"With a stable political environment, we have been able to deliver on our duties effectively, driving social and economic development and enhancing the quality of life for our people," said Chow at Penang MIC's Deepavali open house event.
He also praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for instilling confidence in the government, noting the recognition and stability achieved both domestically and on the international stage.
"Under this government, we have earned the trust of the people, which has been crucial in our ongoing development," he added.
Chow also acknowledged the leadership of Musa Sheikh Fadzir, Penang BN and Umno chief, for his cooperation in fostering stronger ties between PH and BN, which contributed to the positive outcomes of the 2023 state election.
"The results of the election speak volumes about the unity and collaboration between parties," Chow noted, adding that the success was a clear reflection of the strength of the partnership.
In the 2023 state polls, the PH-BN alliance won 29 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured 11 out of the 40 seats in the state assembly. DAP won all 19 of the seats it contested, PKR claimed seven out of 13, and Amanah retained one of the two seats they contested.
BN successfully captured two of the six seats it contested, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol joining Chow's state executive council.
Looking ahead, Chow called for continued and deeper cooperation between PH and BN in order to tackle upcoming challenges, including the next general election, which is slated for three years from now.
Chow also expressed his pride in attending Penang MIC's Deepavali celebrations, marking the first such event held in 15 years. During the gathering, state MIC chief J. Dhinagaran and party members presented Chow with a traditional flower garland and celebrated his 65th birthday, which had taken place the previous day.
Also in attendance was Chow's predecessor and DAP chairman, Lim Guan Eng.
