Market comes alive as ikan selayang sells for 20sen per fish [WATCH]

KUALA TERENGGANU: A neglected wet market came to life yesterday after ikan selayang was sold at 20 sen per fish.

The special price was offered by a seafood trader in conjunction with the opening of fish sales at Pasar Kepong here.

Around 4,800kg of selayang fish were on sale, while other seafood, including ikan merah, prawns, and squid, were sold for up to 20 per cent below market price.

The trader, Wan Ahmad Suhaimi Wan Abd Kadir, said the discounts were not just a promotion but also aimed at helping lower-income households.

"People came as early as 6am even though the market only opens at 6.30am," he said, adding he did not limit the number of fish a customer could buy.

He plans to offer a special price for ikan selar every Saturday.

"Customers don't have to worry about the freshness and quality of our seafood because we bring in new stocks daily from Endau and Kuantan."

One customer, Lailawati Alias said she bought 250 ikan selayang to be given to her neighbours and old folk living nearby.

"I found out about this promotion on TikTok and asked my husband, Mohamad Asmadi Mohd Zanggi, to come with me and buy the fish," she said.

Lailawati, a security guard said the nearly one-hour trip from Kuala Berang to Kuala Terengganu was worth it because of the price of the ikan selayang.
