[UPDATED] MCMC requests social media to remove videos on alleged Sabah corruption scandal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has requested social media platforms to take down videos related to the alleged corruption scandal in Sabah.

Without identifying the specific platforms, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the request was made following a request by the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to facilitate their investigations.

"In the case of alleged corruption involving Sabah assemblymen, the police and MACC are conducting the investigations.

"The police had requested MCMC to take down certain videos that could potentially affect the investigation.

"However, the MCMC is not involved in the investigation," Fahmi said after the Special Committee Meeting to Address Congestion at the Johor Causeway.

He said the decision was made considering that the MCMC has the authority to take such action as the technical agency.

A news portal reported on Sunday that MCMC had requested the site to "immediately remove" an article and video related to the alleged Sabah corruption scandal.

The news portal said that MCMC, in a letter dated Nov 16, stated that the article and video could interfere with police investigations into the death threat against the whistleblower and compromise the safety and privacy of the individual.
